Ports 4.0: NasApp Project - 2.13

NASAPP: Multilayer data platform for managing and anticipating environmental episodes - ENVCOM4.0

NasApp was selected in the 2nd Ports 4.0 call for commercial projects
It has a budget of €232,910.25, with a 65% grant from Ports of the State, and the remaining 35% funded by Eurecat.

This project has developed a new machine learning algorithm for forecasting and anticipating episodes of bad odors. An innovative addition for real-time odor monitoring through the concept of citizen science, integrating advanced tools such as pollutant dispersion models and environmental quality sensors.

Data analysis collected by sensors and citizens

The NasApp platform focuses on recording and analyzing the concentration of odor nuisances and their geographic distribution. By turning citizen perception into useful data, the platform facilitates the understanding and management of odor impact in the area.

Citizens: an active part of the monitoring process

The NasApp app allows citizens to report odor nuisance incidents, generating a dynamic dispersion map that helps port authorities access relevant statistical information. This is crucial for conducting technical and scientific studies, identifying the causes of odor episodes, validating pollutant dispersion models, and issuing early warnings at an industrial level.

Effective management of odor episodes in ports

Thanks to the Ports 4.0 program, NasApp has received funding to enhance its machine learning algorithms in port environments, currently already implemented at the Port of Tarragona. This advancement allows for the prediction of odor episodes that may affect both the port community and surrounding areas.

With this technology, the Port Authority of Tarragona has more detailed information that complements its current atmospheric monitors, optimizing operations and improving residents' quality of life. Additionally, NasApp uses backtracking algorithms to locate the origin of an odor episode. Thanks to Ports 4.0, it takes a step further by integrating AI with real-time citizen perception data, becoming an early warning system for critical events and overcoming the limitations of chemical equipment by accurately capturing the sensitivity of the human sense of smell.

Project objectives:

To implement a new AI algorithm in the NasApp web manager, capable of integrating citizens' sensory olfactory perception in real-time in port environments to serve as an early warning system for critical events and environmental monitoring, identifying the source and surpassing the limitations of current equipment that do not allow in-situ quantification of odor episodes with the precision of the human sense of smell.

To strengthen the platform's competitive advantages with the goal of fully commercializing it in port environments, including:
  • Implementation of the complete system in the logistical-port environment of the Port of Tarragona.
  • Improvements in platform usability.
  • Automation of reports.
  • Integration of air quality data from open data sources.
  • Predictive algorithms based on historical data.
